the heidle method

Reach out to inquire

Every now and again I take on my version of a custom project, aka, The Heidle Method. What does this entail, you ask?

The Heidle method is a process where I welcome the client in on the conception of the design, where the user and the environment are specifically designed for. Clients and Interior designers alike.

But how does it work?

First step is reaching out and presenting your need. Just as many of you, I do my best work when its work I want to be doing, therefore not all projects are for me! If we align, then we move on to the first stage, the interview.

1. the interview

The interviewing process is really all about getting to know who the concept is for, to really understand what needs the user is looking to have met. Whats a day in the life? How do they exist around their meubles, what, if all their dreams could come true, would this piece of furniture offer them? If the client has inspiration images, they are more than welcome, however I am simply not interested in reproducing any other designs, my work is my interpretation. Strictly. In the interview we'll chat about price range,  to be concluded post Concept Selection.

2. Site Visit + Sketching

One of my most unliked parts of designing corporately was how 'general' it was, and how many people were unhappy with what they received. This process is really intended to be the antithesis of that. I strongly prefer to do site visits to understand the space and to feel the environment in order to take it into deep consideration. This covers how it interacts and flows with your other furniture, the structure, electric sockets etc. If you're getting it made custom, it might as well be really fucking custom, right? Right.

I come equipped with a big ol' roll of paper and sketching tools to get it right and scaled for the next stage, the CSD, as well as initial samples of wood species and finishes for the client to choose from.

3. Concept Selection Deck (CSD)

I then take a moment to refine, sketch, ask further questions if necessary, and then present the client with what I call a Concept Selection Deck. The CSD is a refined document catered specifically to the project where I offer a few original designs to choose from. All 3D modelled with great detail to clearly communicate the offering.

4. Mock-up, scaling + second site visit

(not always necessary)

With certain aspects of projects that are a little bit less obvious to imagine, such as the Amoeba coffee tables, how the organic shape feels and how tall it should be in relation to the space, I'll make a mock-up of the shape and some different height stands and bring them into the home in order to conclude proportions and to ensure there are no unwelcome surprises.

5. Project Execution

We'll book your projects making slot into my calendar, and execution will take anywhere from 2 -5 weeks dependent on the project itself. It is generally a faster process compared to ordering from online retailers, plus its local and made of solid wood - no mdf or particle board here. If the client is interested in the process, I will share images with them along the ride, as well as they are welcome to visit my studio and see their baby in the works.

6. Delivery + Installation

Not much to elaborate on here, just fuzzy feelings.

*Additional info*

The nature of my work is BIG, personalized and expensive all in terms of materials, time investment, turning down other projects as well as secure and safe storage. For this reason Heidle Method projects require 100% of funds once concept is finalized.

I live in the city known as Vancouver BC, Canada

but I am grateful to be practicing on the unseeded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.
